How to Overcome Doubt and Have Faith in God

Having an unshakable faith in God can be a difficult task, especially if you’re experiencing doubt. Doubt can be a difficult emotion to conquer, as it can be rooted in numerous factors such as emotions, experiences and beliefs. 

All too often, we allow ourselves to let doubt overpower us, blocking us from our spiritual growth, particularly when it comes to believing that “God is always with us, loving us unconditionally” (John 13:34). 

Despite the difficulty of having faith, it’s important to remember that it is a journey that all of us embark on, and our faith will be renewed if we turn to God in prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Steps to overcoming doubt and having faith in God

 1. Identify the source of your doubts. 

Is it a difficult experience from the past that has caused you to lose hope? Or is it a feeling of worry or helplessness that’s preventing you from believing in a loving and compassionate God (1 Peter 5:6-7)? 

Once you identify the source of your doubts, you can begin to seek out ways to combat them (Romans 12:2).

2. Build your faith through prayer. 

Praying to God can help you to feel His presence in times of uncertainty and allows you to be in dialogue with Him, allowing you to express your questions, fears and doubts (Philippians 4:6-7). 

Turn to Jesus for guidance and strength, and ask for His assistance in times of need (Matthew 7:7). Having faith in God also means believing that despite difficult times, God is still with us and has a plan for us (Jeremiah 29:11).

3. Take a step back and look at the bigger picture. 

Instead of focusing on the small worries and struggles that arise, it’s important to recognize the bigger picture and believe in “the power of God” (Romans 1:16). This can help you to realize that although times may be difficult, God has bigger plans for us and will guide us through our moments of doubt (Isaiah 40:31).

4. Make efforts to fill your life with hope, love and positivity. 

Surrounding yourself with people who hold strong beliefs and will encourage you to build your faith in God (Hebrews 10:24-25) can help you in your journey of maintaining faith. 

Also, spending time reading verses from The Bible (Psalm 119:11), attending religious services (John 4:23-24) and listening to sermons (1 Timothy 4:13) can be a great way to be reminded of the power of faith in God.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by doubt and to let it chip away at your faith in God (James 1:6-7). But it’s important to remember that faith is an ongoing journey and one that begins with knowledge and thoughtful action (James 1:22). 

Once you are able to identify the source of your doubts, be honest with God in prayer (Psalm 22:1) and fill your life with hope (Hebrews 11:1), you will be empowered to make the changes necessary to have faith in God.
